We talked about$B!D(B
$B!&(Blooking back on the year 2020
$B!&(BChristmas
$B!&(Btoo busy to enjoy the holiday spirit

Then, we moved to Today's topic.
$B!z(BWhy Accepting Change Makes Life Easier
After reading the article one by one, we talked about this article.

It was the last session of this year.
I've learned a lot from STIE members.
And I$B!G(Bve also enjoyed talking with people from different backgrounds.
This year, due to the pandemic, it is hard to see people in person.
Thanks to STIE, I can see and talk with STIE members.
I hope you will have a wonderful new year.

The report of the meeting on 23/12/2020

There were seven attendees at the session on Wednesday, December 23rd. We divided us into two groups, and after we made short speeches, we talked about the following topics.

$B!&(BHow do you spend your new year's eve? Any plans for this year?

We talked about movies, the way of studying English, favorite singers, and how to spend our New Year$B!G(Bs Eve.

One shared the experience working in Canada. It does sound really tough to work in an English environment, however immersing yourself in that language is the best way to get fluent.

We also talked about how kids learn new languages. It$B!G(Bs amazing that they can soak up them like sponges!

We had a lively conversation, I hope every participants enjoyed the session as much as I did.

The report of the meeting on 19/12/2020

There were ten attendees at the session on Saturday, December 19.
We split into 2 groups.
We first made short speeches as usual.
They are about:
-snowfall in and around the Tohoku area,
-her co-worker who might have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19,
-keeping a 10-year-long diary made with Excel
-a chunk of bacon as a Christmas present,
and so on.

Then, we moved to today's topic:
"Hidden victims of covid pandemic".

2020 has been a terrible year with the covid pandemic.
We learned how deeply the pandemic has affected our life especially life of people who are in a vulnerable position such as children and women.
The death toll might be much higher than the government announced, if people who died without PCR tests are included.
Domestic abuse and suicide seem to be increasing under Lockdowns.
Medical service workers are also victims who are forced to be overworked under risky conditions.
There are so many people who lost jobs. Under this economic stagnation, BI (basic income) might be one of solutions in order people could sustain life at a tolerable level.
I'd like to expect effectiveness of the vaccine. I hope 2021 will be a much brighter year.

He bought a DVD player at a second-hand store.

He is currently considering whether to subscribe to NHK's BS broadcasting because there are many historic programs such as Sengoku warlords on BS. So he would like to sign a contract to watch and record such interesting programs freely.

There is no doubt that the start of inoculation against Covid 19 is bright news for us. On the one hand, it is necessary to identify the side effects carefully.
Although the government targets older adults and people with underlying illnesses, he thinks young people should be targeted first. This is because young people are considered to be resistant to both viruses and side effects.

The standards of beauty are different now than they used to be.
It was said that Westerners had beautiful faces in the past, but now that is not always the case. In particular, when it comes to human beauty, it should be said that there are many standards, rather than one.

He always raises the national flag on national holidays, especially on New Year's holidays. About 600 houses are in his residential area, but a national flag can only be seen at his home on New Year's Day.
In the past, a person in his neighborhood asked him, "Why do you hoist the national flag?"
He replied, "That's because this day is a special day."
One of the participants suggested that he should have asked the question back like following;
"Why don't you hoist the national flag?"

The report of the meeting on 5/12/2020

There were 8 attendees at tonight$B!G(Bs session on December 5th.
Therefore, we made 2 groups.

First, we started the session with $B!H(BWhat$B!G(Bs new$B!I(B. There was a great story that a member passed the Eiken Grade 1. I heard that she got as many as 15,000 words, so I think I still need to devote myself to learning English more and more.

Then, we moved to $B!H(Btoday's topic$B!I(B. We talked about year-end event etc. under the circumstances of Covid-19 sickness. In the flow of the story of this year's buzzword like solo camping, there was a story about solo driving in Kyushu area. There was also a story about making a lot of face masks by ourself under the circumstances of Covid-19 sickness. I thought that everyone was really challenging, and I was very inspired.

The report of the meeting on 28/11/2020

There were 9 members at tonight's session. Therefore we made 2 groups. We started the session with What's new as usual. Here$B!G(Bs what we talked about.

What's new
There are a large number of post stations along the Nakasendo and Toukaido. Nakasendo has the longest route linking to Kyoto. The Load passes through the forest. So in such areas, there are old style buildings still remaining. An imperial princess also visited one of those post stations in the past.

Under the circumstances of spreading Coronavirus, it is important to let fresh air into a room occasionally during the wintertime in order to prevent us from infection. They say we should keep windows open and also heaters on at the same time. Then we can make our environment compatible with prevention. However what if your seat is so close to the window. How do we make it work?

The new US vice president will be a woman. This will be the first time in the US. People say we are all equal under the law and there are some female leaders in the world. However those cases are still rare. In any field such as world's leaders, executives at the company or organizations, male is still dominant. We should get over the gender gap.

When people express a state of something which spreads among people widely just like a virus, they say $B!H%P%:$k!I(B in Japanese. English translation for it is $B!H(Bgo viral$B!I(B, and it can be used in a positive context.

Today$B!G(Bs topics
Who or What are you a fan of?
Japanese American Musician gives a talk about American culture on his youtube channel. He makes music for Japanese animation and lives in the US. His channel helps learn not only English but also US society.

Have you ever been embarrassed from inadvertent misunderstanding?
When people make a conversation, looking into the eyes of the listener is polite in English country. However in Japan, that's not true. Not knowing it can make you feel embarrassed.

If your foreign friends come to see you, where do you take them?
There are many temples in Japan, especially in Kyoto. It can probably be a mean question asking the difference between temple and shrine. Can you answer it?

Unfortunately we didn't have enough time for all members to answer the question.
Thanks for sharing your talk. It was fun.
(Toru)

The report of the meeting on 25/11/2020

The first participant said about called happy Monday, because we had 8 times of the consecutive three holidays this year.
The second said that his area stoped the event called "Go to travel" by new coronavirus. A lot of citizen has to stay-home and are feeling frustrated.
The third said that she has lived in the capital city in a foreign country and there are about 200 infected people in a day within one million population. It seems higher rate than others.
And the last said about the digital currency. In Japan, the test of the digital currency will start from early next year. Japanese digital governance is much behind compared with foreign countries they say. We expect the digital agency which was set by new cabinet.

After that, we talked about today's topic "the nuisance call."
1) What kind of nuisance calls have you been called?
What do you do when you get a nuisance phone call?
2) Your phone has any function against the nuisance call?
And the other.
But some of the members who are young generation don't have a landline telephone in their home. This topic was not suitable for them........ maybe.
Thank you.

We talked about Japanese sweets, the recent news in Japan, the Go To Campaign, and the place you would like to visit after the coronavirus settles down.

One shared a topic about Oobanyaki which is Japanese sweets. It$B!G(Bs interesting that the name varies from place to place. People call it Imagawayaki in my area, but other members called it differently.

Almost all members haven$B!G(Bt taken advantage of the Go To Campaign yet which indicates that how bad the situation is currently in Japan.
I hope the coronavirus gets resolved as soon as possible, and everyone feels safe.
(Naoko)

The report of the meeting on 11/11/2020

There were five attendees at the session on Wednesday, November 11.
We first made short speeches.
They are about:
A little earlier snow falling in his area,
Announcement of a vaccine with 90 % effectiveness against COVID-19,
Increasing the number of people infected with COVID-19,
Searching the Internet for a software which makes your face photogenic,
and so on.

Then, we moved to today's topic:
"Teens in Japan Read More During Pandemic".

It is said that autumn is for reading in Japan.
The article describes a survey by the Nippon Foundation; a quarter of Japanese teenagers have been reading more during the coronavirus pandemic than they did before the outbreak.
After reading the article, we discussed with some questions related to it.

$B!&(BDid you read a lot when you were a teenager?
$B!&(BWhy do you think only one-third of Japanese teenagers read newspapers?
$B!&(BWhat books do you think every teenager should read?

One said that in elementary school days his class had had 10 minute reading time after the morning class-meeting every day. He liked to read books written by Ranpo Edogawa.
Another said there had been a book-lending shop on the way back from school. He used to drop by the shop, and rent comic books about sports such as judo and kendo. He passed them around and read them in turn with his friends.
He also used to clip and kept his favorite news articles.

Nowadays, most teenagers have their own smartphones. They can get news or information with the smartphone. That may be one of the reasons they don't read newspapers.

Another talked about an English book entitled "Super Reading Aloud" ($BD62;FI(B) written by an acquaintance of hers. Also "The story of Jiro", mysteries and suspense were recommended by others.
(Yuki)

Currently, the hot spring town is in trouble due to the $B!H(Bcorona recession$B!I(B.
We read and discussed articles about hot spring water and yukata take-out services. Hot springs are an important culture for Japan, so I think it would be better for everyone to come up with ideas so that they would never$B!!(Bdecline.
In addition, we talked about the fun of hot springs and the fact that people with tattoos come to hot springs.
I hope that the corona pandemic will end as soon as possible and that we will be able to relax in the hot spring area.
(Maru)

Maina point is a system that can be obtained points by combining My Number Card and credit card payment. Through the Maina point system, she got 7,000 WAON points, which is AEON's point service.

After moving, I finally have settled in a new place. He was bitten by a snake I bought at the laboratory, but fortunately, he is glad it was a non-poisonous snake.

Vote counting for the US presidential election has begun. Whichever candidate wins, it is unlikely that the result will be peaceful. We still need to keep an eye on the situation in American society.

I went to Tokyo Sky Tree about 10 years ago, but I couldn't enter it due to the limited number of people. I want to go again, but I am hesitant to go because I am worried about this corona's infection status.

He has been to Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. It is an integrated resort with many entertainment facilities such as pools and casinos. There are rumors that the building is starting to tilt.

The report of the meeting on 28/10/2020

5 members got together tonight.
We talked about $B!H(BWhat$B!G(Bs new?$B!I(B

The first attendee asked us,
Why is there the rule that the election of the President of the USA will be voted on Tuesday? She said that Sunday is a holiday which is for enjoying for us. And Monday is used for travel to the voting places, because the USA is so vast that some people live far from the voting places.
In the USA, the real first weekday is "Tuesday". Therefor? (In the case of Japanese, we call the first day of the week that "Blue Monday")

The second attendee,
Recently trendy words are popular in Japan. "Paripi" means a people who love to attend parties. "Kasuhara" means customer's harassment, it's like a claimer. Compressed words have made threaten the elderly I think.

The third attender,
A trained Shepherd dog ran away from a policeman. After 2 days the dog was protected. This is one of the dog's strike or not?.

The forth attender,
The autumn season reached his area. His area is colder than the other members, therefor he is enjoying the autumn color already.

The final attendee,
How to distinguish its true site from false.
There are 3 points that how to distinguish them as far as I know.
1. which is better the "HTTP" or "https" in the URL address?
The alphabet "s" of the "https" means "Secure". This site which is used "https" is encrypted the information of the home pages. The "HTTP" URL address doesn't encrypt. Encrypting the data is an essential thing in the web world.
2. Is there a key mark at the head of the URL address?
This key mark displays us this site is safe. If you push the key mark, you can make sure the certificate of the server.
3. There is the company name in the URL address.
Be careful, you can find almost similar company names. The Dison Company gets damaged from the fake homepage. The company name was "yodison" The fake homepage has always misleading addresses.
Thank you.( Ue )

The report of the meeting on 24/10/2020

There were 8 attendees at the session on October 24.
We were divided into 2 groups.

First, we made a short speech.
We talked about$B!D(B
$B!&(Bgain new knowledge for the future
$B!&(Bwork out
$B!&(Bcar inspection

Then, we moved to Today's topic.
$B!z(BWorld Food Programme wins Nobel Peace Prize
The WFP got the award, "for its efforts to combat hunger" and "for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas".

After reading the article one by one, we talked about this article.

In one of the members' opinion, the WFP efforts are great but we should think about the cause of hunger. The real cause of food insecurity results from the failure of distribution which is attributed to wars. I totally agree with her opinion.
Accordingn to a study, it is said that the world population will reach 10 billion in 2050.
Under this circumstances, it sounds difficult to eliminate hunger.
But I hope world peace and stability and I'd like to see the better world.
(Akemi)

The report of the meeting on 21/10/2020

There were five attendees at the session on Wednesday, October 21st. After we made short speeches, we talked about the following topics.

$B!&(BPlease tell us about the kind of news that you are into.
$B!&(BWhat dialect do you speak?
$B!&(BWhat are your favorite YouTube channels?

We talked about US presidential election 2020, dialects, Shamisen and Shakuhachi, and member$B!G(Bs favorite YouTube channels.

Despite the fact that we don$B!G(Bt have the voting rights, we had a great conversation regarding the election. We shared each other$B!G(Bs opinions.

And I don$B!G(Bt speak dialect myself so it was very interesting to hear what dialect the attendees speak. I think speaking dialects show one$B!G(Bs backgrounds and identities that should be cherished. It$B!G(Bs a beautiful thing!
(Naoko)

The report of the meeting on 14/10/2020

There were seven attendees, including a new trial one, at the session on Wednesday, October 14.

We first introduced ourselves to one another and then made short speeches.
They are about
Suzuka 8 hours Endurance Road Race,
her first telework,
Supreme Court's decision over equal pay for equal work,
the past and present of trams,
the beginning of a new life in the new place,
and so on.

Then, we moved to today's topic: "Big Insect Problem".
It is about how important insects are for other animals as their food and humans as good help in farming, and the fact that the number of insects is falling.
After reading the article sentence by sentence, We discussed 6 questions chosen out of 10.

1. What is your most favorite insect? Why? What is your most unfavorite insect? Why?
2. Have you ever enjoyed collecting insects?
3. What insects haven't been seen in and around your area recently?
4. Have you ever eaten insects? Are they tasty?
6. What do you think of wormed vegetables? Can you eat them?
10. Can you imagine a world without any insects?

There exist beautiful insects and grotesque ones. Some are helpful and some are harmful. Locusts which are boiled with sugar and soy sauce, or roasted or fried are tasty. Insects let us know changes of seasons. They give us good memories in childhood, like collecting beetles, or listening to buzz of cicadas. It may be difficult for us to imagine a world without any insects.
(Yuki)

The report of the meeting on 10/10/2020

There were six attendees at the session tonight.
At first, we stated from $B!H(BWhat's new topic.$B!I(B
Since Japan is in the typhoon season, there is much talk about the effect of typhoons such as heavy rains. It is difficult for us to go out due to the corona virus, but I hope that typhoons will not come at least.

Next, we moved onto today's topic.
I asked each person to choose their favorite question from the following questions and answer.
$B!{(B Do you think Japanese people work style is changing after Corona pandemic ?
$B!{(B Did you buy a new item for stay home recently ?
$B!{(B What is good point or bad point of stay home work ?
$B!{(B What do you spend a lot of time in the room ?
$B!{(B Is there a new job that you would like to start in the current situation ?
It is unclear whether the corona virus will disappear in the future. It may be time to think about getting back to life while dealing with the cronavairus infection.
(Maru)

The report of the meeting on 7/10/2020

The number of participants in the meeting tonight was five.
In the first half of the time, each participant talked about recent events.

$B!&(B I have a habit of making impulse purchases. Especially when I'm waiting for the cash register, I tend to buy something within reach. Sometimes I bought some things at a 100-yen shop and went home and thought some of them were unnecessary. Impulsive buying does not always apply only to expensive items.

$B!&(B In particular, annual health examinations, including endoscopy, makes me nervous.

Participants chose a favorite question from 10 questions and talked about it.

He has watched NHK's Taiga drama, and he is looking forward to future developments. In particular, it is interesting to see how Mitsuhide's life and the final showcase, "Honnoji Incident," will be ended.

Godzilla is the most influential imaginary animal in the world. It has been remade many times in Japanese movies and overseas movies, but it is still alive and becomes a human ally or a hostile existence.

Teaching Japanese to foreigners is very difficult. In particular, it is challenging to get a firm understanding of the differences between the particles "ha" and "ga."
(Libran)

The report of the meeting on 3/10/2020

There were 4 attendees at the session.
We talked about what's new as usual. They are below.
$B!&(BTo purchase some new appliances.
$B!&(BThe suggestion on taking a bath for relaxing.
$B!&(BThe survey of relation between diabetes and drinking coffee.
$B!&(BNews about a bear came into the city and a man was attacked.

Today's topic was about plant extinction. We read the article and answered a couple of questions, then talked about them. These are the questions we talked about.
$B!&(BWhat do you think of when you hear the word 'extinction'?
$B!&(BWhat do you think of plants?
$B!&(BHow important are plants?
$B!&(BHow useful are fungi?
$B!&(BHow serious an issue is food insecurity?

One of the attendees talked the word 'extinction' reminds dinosaur or Japanese wild wolf.
An environmental changes after meteor strike is probably the reason for dinosaur.
According to my personal research, extinction of Japanese wolf is caused by combination of some factors which is contagious disease such as the rabies and human activity.
Then our interest developed in importance and usage of plants. Plants are used in all aspects of our lives and are essential. Not just as food, but also medicine and etc. Fungi are used to make processed foods such as a bread, attendees talked.
Last of all, the world population tends to increase. Food insecurity is now very serious problem.
We need to figure out the way before it runs out.
(Toru)

The report of the meeting on 30/9/2020

6 members got together tonight.
After we talked "What's new?", we discussed today's topic that "Is that necessary or unnecessary?" part $B-6(B.

All attenders talked their thinking about "Is that necessary or unnecessary?$B!I(B
Of course, their opinion were depend on the attenders.

My thinking is below.
1. A seal $B%O%s%3(B unnecessary
In Japan, we use a personal seal called HANKO in place of a signature since a long ago. This is a peculiar Japanese culture in the world.
But we are under the new coronavirus. The rapid spread of the telework has been bringing overhaul to put the seal on the settlement and contract document.
It is a big waste of time to come to the office for putting their seal.
Recently, big companies adopt an electronic contract without signature and seal. Of course, it has legal effect as same as signature and seal.
The de-seal system will spread to many kinds of business from now on.

2. Euthanasia (mercy killing) $B0B3Z;`(B necessary
Euthanasia means that giving death to someone or animals without pain.
Generally, it is expressed to mean medical treatment for end-of-life patients.
But active euthanasia which is the doctor hasten with intentional is not allowed in a law now on in Japan.
But almost all not always violate a law.
If a patient wants to relieve a physical strong pain, and he wants to die with his will, there is a case of allowed.
But this is a case by case, it can be murder by contract sometimes.
Japan is under the aging world now, we can't avoid this problem soon or later.
In Japan, like this case happened 7 times in the past and 5 times was not prosecuted.
Holland and Belgium are legalized it already.

3. IR (Integrated resorts) unnecessary
The Japanese government wants to promote the construction of what it calls "integrated resorts" that include casinos. It says the resorts will create jobs and bring in more tourists.
The Osaka Prf started to invite action actively already.
Japan is a gambling paradise they say. Compare with Macao and L.V, the Japanese turnover of gambling is 30 trillion yen but Macao and LV are 3 trillion only.
How do you think about the gambling addiction?
It depends on their will and the situation of their around and the environment.
A person who has a strong-willed and can control themselves is seldom to be gambling addiction. There are many gamblers who are on welfare.

4. Different surname. $BIWIXJL@+(B necessary
In the Japanese civil law, what a married couple has a different surname is not allowed.
This is just Japan only. The UN asked the reform the law sometimes but the conservatives of the ruling party always have been opposed.
But car drivers can enter former name on the driving license recently.
This may be one step to the reformation.

5. TV reception fee of the NHK. unnecessary
We don't have a choice of whether we contract with NHK or not.
The contract and the contains of the programs always one-way traffic from the NHK. Therefore NHK has responsibility for everything. The E channel has a value for watching compare with other private broadcasting. But the main channel called G is a lower level than E channel. The G channel has been occupied by a lot of comedians. The almost comedians have no skills and just noisy and loud. The G channel of the NHK is almost the same level as a private broadcasting company.
Recently, a new party which is against NHK was established. I disagree with them but I don't complete denial them.
NHK has to hear more the voice of the viewers and listeners.
Thank you.

The report of the meeting on 26/9/2020

There were 6 attendees at the session on September 26.

First, we made a short speech.

$B!&(BKyoto animation
$B!&(BCOVID-19
$B!&(Ba man without a facemask was trying to get on the bus.
$B!&(BThe saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage

Then, we moved to Today's topic.
$B!z(Bmysterious seeds appearing in mailboxes around the world
Some people got suspicious seeds from China.
They are not biological weapons or invasive species.
It is a type of scam called $B!H(Bbrushing$B!I(B.

After reading the article paragraph by paragraph, we talked about scams.
We need to watch out for scams because new ones are appearing one after another.

There were five attendees at the session on Wednesday, September 23rd. After we made short speeches, we talked about the following topics.

$B!&(BHow has the coronavirus changed your way of life?
$B!&(BWould you get a COVID-19 vaccine if they were available?
$B!&(BPlease tell us about trips you have taken.
(The pleces you have been to, the places you want to go to, etc...)

We talked about the vaccine, pet graves, the new practice for COVID-19, and trips abroad.

It was very interesting for me to hear their opinions regarding the vaccine because we$B!G(Bre in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak.Every person has different point of view.

One shared a picture of his pet$B!G(Bs grave that was absolutely gorgeous. When I saw it, I felt his affection for his pet.

And it$B!G(Bs always fun to hear travel stories. It$B!G(Bs pretty difficult to go abroad right now due to Coronavirus, but when it settles down, I$B!G(Bd like to visit the places that they mentioned one day!

The report of the meeting on 19/9/2020

There were seven attendees at the session on Saturday, September 19.

First, each made a short speech, as usual.
They are about as follows:
practicing blind touch typing,
suffering from summer fatigue,
expecting 40 percent reduction of communication charges,
worrying about unauthorized bank deposit withdrawals using Docomo account,
visiting the grave in a comfortable weather with a little humidity,
worrying about crowded public transportation in the Go-To Travel campaign,
and so on.

Then, we moved to today's topic:
"New Bus to Travel from New Delhi to London in 70 Days".

It is about a 20,000 kilometer trip with four legs, called Bus to London, created by Indian travel company Adventures Overland.
After reading the article by the paragraph, we discussed six questions.

1. What are your thoughts on Bus to London?
2. Which leg of the Bus to London journey do you think you'd enjoy the most? Why?
3. What's the longest bus trip you've ever taken? Please share your experience.
4. Do you think you'd enjoy working as a tour guide? Why? Why not?
5. If you were planning a 70-day vacation, what would you want to do and see? Please explain your answer.
6. What's the longest period of time you've spent traveling? Please share your experience.

With the coronavirus crisis, a long distance bus travel sounds risky, but on the other hand, we might feel something like a longing to such time consuming travel. We would enjoy nice scenery through the bus windows.

and so on.

Then, we moved to today's topic:
"Japanese Airline Tests Hands-Free Bathroom Doors".

It is about a bathroom door that passengers can open and close without using their hands, which has been tested by ANA.
After reading the article by the paragraph, we discussed three questions about it.

1. What are your thoughts on ANA's hands-free bathroom doors?
2. What changes would you make to airplanes to make flying more enjoyable?
3. What do you imagine air travel will be like 50 years from now?

Under the coronavirus crisis, hygienic hands-free doors and no-touch check-in screens will be essencial. We cannot stop this trend.

The report of the meeting on 12/9/2020

There were eight attendees today's cession.
And, we have two newcomers tonight, so we started from self-introduction one by one.
First, the regular members introduced themselves, and then newcomers also introduced themselves. We also asked newcomers questions as far as they could answer, such as the area where they live.

Next, we separated in two groups, and talked about today's theme $B!H(BSpace travel$B!I(B.
It depends on each person whether they are interested in going to space, but I think it is meaningful for humankinds to go to space and develop.
I hope that one day, when the time comes when human being can enjoy space travel easily, and above all, safely, we will have a wonderful experience.

The report of the meeting on 2/9/2020

There were six attendees tonight.
Here's a summary of what each person said:

* Shinzo Abe announced on August 28 that he would resign as Prime Minister because of his illness. During eight years in his office, he accomplished a lot. In the meantime, although there are still unfinished work he wanted and some tarnish matters, the achievements should be positively evaluated.

* One of my relatives gave up on continuing his farming because of his frail old age. Overall, rice cultivation in Japan is not so tricky nowadays due to mechanization development, but a large amount of capital is required for stable agriculture. It is impractical for smallholders to invest such much money for keeping farming. Therefore, shortly, his farmland will be left to a third party to continue cultivation.

Every attendee has chosen a favorite question from the prepared 12 queries and described their thoughts.

* Racial discrimination against blacks became more acute in American society after the Trump administration. The frequent shootings against black people in various places are a social stigma that has long been rooted in American society.

* There are many problems with gene recombination technology, and we do not know what kind of serious issues will arise in the future. Still, it is becoming indispensable for society, and we should think that technology is of great value to humankind.

* As a function to be implemented on smartphones in the future, we would like to appreciate the function that translates animals' words. In particular, dogs, cats, whales, etc. are thought to have their languages, so we want to create a society where humans can communicate with animals.

* Since the Covid19 epidemic has spread, I have given up going to restaurants. Instead, gathering information about cooking methods from the Internet and challenging various cooking dishes, many cooking methods, especially those using a microwave oven, are very useful. By discovering that information and practicing cooking based on it, I was able to expand the range of cuisine.

The report of the meeting on 29/8/2020

There were 5 attendances. We started with what's new as usual.
We talked about the Primeminister$B!G(Bs resignation, murder case, badminton circle, and former politician.

Then we moved on to today's topic.
We read the article about the weather and answered the following questions.
1, What do you think the difference between weather and climate is?
2, What do you think the difference between typhoon, hurricane, and cyclone is?
3, What can we do in order to prevent the suffering of a typhoon?
4, Do you think we will be able to control the weather in the future?
5, What do you think about this article.
6, What is the worst natural disaster you have ever experienced?

Weather refers to the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place such as a temperature. On the other hand, climate is used to refer to the weather for the long term.
We call strong rainstorms differently. However all those are the same. It depends where you live. It's still difficult to prevent the suffering of a typhoon.
Now the weather forecast is more accurate than ever. We can get an alert very soon through our phone. Technology is perhaps the solution. In China, It's attempted to control the weather. However, that attempt can cause international problems. Some say Nature is not something we can control.

The report of the meeting on 26/8/2020

Five members got together tonight.
After we talked "What's new?", we discussed today's topic that "Is that necessary or unnecessary?"
We have many things or activities which are necessary or unnecessary.
But these depend on each person.
How do you think these are necessary or unnecessary for current Japan?
We talked about the numbers 1, 4, 5.

1. Linear motor train.
Japanese land is so narrow and it will bring destroy nature. It will take big money. The money should be used to the local line in the countryside. Unmanned stations, and out of service of the railroad are many.
Two members talked it's unnecessary.

2. TV reception fee of the NHK.
3. Female Emperor or Female line Emperor.
4. The 9 article of the Japanese Constitution.
This is so difficult problem by not only our members also all Japanese.
We could keep peace for 75 years, that's thanks for the 9 article of the Japanese Constitution.
Almost all people who had experienced the world war agree the 9 article of the Japanese Constitution.
The environment around us has changed compared with 75 years ago.
The exclusively defensive security policy $B!J@l New weapons have been developing day by day.

5. 1 yen coin.
Since the consumption tax started in 1989, 1 yen coin was to be an essential coin.
Japanese housewife deeply appreciate the number "98" on the price tags and flyers.$B!!!!(B
Nowadays we are under the cashless world.
The production cost of the 1 yen coin takes 3 yen and running cost also takes 13 yen.

6. Northern 4 islands.
7. An investment of the pension money.
8. IR (Integrated resorts)
9. Necessary evil
10. Euthanasia (mercy killing)

I would like to discuss other entries at the next opportunity.

The report of the meeting on 22/8/2020

There were 6 attendees at the session on August 22.

First, we made a short speech.
We talked about$B!D(B
$B!&(Bswimming
$B!&(Bnews about charging \1,100 for paper bankbooks
$B!&(BA wedding ceremony were postponed due to the pandemic
$B!&(Bonline shopping
$B!&(Bworking from home

Then, we moved to Today's topic.
$B!z(BRiver Nile Dam
The article is about a controversial dam on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is constructing the dam to supply electricity.
Egypt views the dam as an "existential threat" and is concerned the dam will reduce its water supplies. Most of Egypt's water comes entirely from the Nile, particularly during times of drought.

After we read out loud the article one by one, we discuss this article and dams.

We can't live without water.
According to the news, the tensions in that region have escalated after Ethiopia announced that it had started filling.
I hope they will find a peaceful solution.

The report of the meeting on 19/8/2020

There were six attendees at the session on Wednesday, August 19.

After we made short speeches, we talked about the following topics.

$B!&(BWhich do you prefer? Books or films?
$B!&(BPlease tell us about the kind of news that you are into.
$B!&(BIf your foreign friends visited your country, where would you take them?

We talked about films, the anniversary of the end of World War II, the places that the members want to take foreign friends to, and Shougi.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with what happened in World War II, but the session gave me a chance to think about it, and made me want to know more regarding the history of Japan.

I haven't traveled in Japan yet, and don't know much about touristy places in Japan. Ise Grand Shrine and Ninjayashiki that the attendees shared would be great places to take foreign friends!

We also talked about Shougi and Sota Fujii who is the youngest Shougi title holder on record. One of the attendees said that he enjoys playing it online every day. I will never be able to play it. It$B!G(Bs too intricate for me!
(Nao)

The report of the meeting on 12/8/2020

There were six attendees at the session on Wednesday, August 12.
We did not have to split. However, we had white noise intermittently during a conversation. A member said the condition of his computer or a certain device seemed to be bad. He rebooted his computer and skype software. But the situation was not improved. So he left the session earlier.
If someone finds the solution of this problem, please let us know it.

First, each made a short speech, as usual.
They are about
vaccin of COVID-19,
small portable fans,
to write a book,
to stop paid plastic shopping bags,
and so on.

Then, we moved to today's topic:
"Spanish Company Reveals 3D Printed Vegan Steak".
It is about 3D printed steak demonstrated by a Spanish company, Novameat. This steak is made from peas, rice, seaweed and other ingredients. To decrease greenhouse gases and to feed growing population, this kind of plant-based food can be a good solution, the article describes. In the future, we might eat plant-based beaf, pork or fish.

After reading the article by the paragraph, we discussed three questions about it.
1. What are your thoughts on Novameat's 3D printed vegan steak?
2. If given the chance, would you like to try a 3D printed steak? Why? Why not?
3. Do you expect 3D printed food to become commonplace within your lifetime?

As the microwave oven is now commonplace, we might possess a 3D-printer oven in each family near future.

The report of the meeting on 8/8/2020

There were 5 attendees at the session on August 8.
We started from $B!H(BWhat's new topic.$B!I(B
In August, the temperature has become so high that there is a lot of talk about the heat. It seems that people are spending more time in the house because of a corona pandemic, but it's season to take care of heat stroke.
Today's main topic was $B!H(Bhate speach in SNS".
Not only SNS but also YouTube and TicTok has made some problems. We talked about below questions.
$B!!!;!!(BHow many SNS ID do you have?
$B!!!;!!(BDo you like SNS?
$B!!!;!!(BWhat do you think about this news?
$B!!!;!!(BWhat is good / bad point of SNS?
$B!!!;!!(BSometime SNS and YouTube and TikTok have make problems.
What we should do?
There are various opinions from the members, but eveyone seems to feel that this is a very difficult problem.
SNS is very useful and convenient internet tool, however, sometime it have made big problems and sad story.
I think we must seriously address this issue immidiately.

The report of the meeting on 29/7/2020

A total of 5 people participated in the session.

Now, one in three Americans has no mask, and 10% of them do not recognize the effect of wearing a mask. Also, even the president recommends wearing a mask, but the public ignores the advice.
Given these circumstances, many Americans seem to misunderstand the meaning of freedom.

In Japan, no new drama has been produced recently due to the epidemic of COVID.
Instead, all the time, the TV companies rerun the same dramas, so some say they are tired of watching.

Prime Minister Abe promised to distribute face masks to all the people a long time ago, but even now, all the family members in one participant's household have not yet received the masks.

What would be the worst "buy one get one free" sale of all time? One of the best answers is a casket.
Movies that you will never tire of watching are "Sound of music," "Roman holidays," and "Avatars."

Although taking a nap is sometimes effective, taking a nap every day is counterproductive because it adversely affects other work.

The report of the meeting on 25/7/2020

We had 7 members in total today and split into 2 groups.
We started with "what's new" as usual. We talked about beauty salon, relations between US and China and an examination.
Then we moved to the today's topic and talked about multiple topics.

There are 6800 islands in Japan, one of the members told. And only 400 of those islands have inhabitants. He said it would be a computer, if he only had to take one thing to a deserted island. Some of those islands support network.
The other member told that it would be a notebook and something to write. She said it can be used to not only keep notes but also draw pictures like animals.

Then we also talked about go to travel campaign.
One of the members told that she disagree with it. It is too early to begin the campaign like that urges people to go to travel, she said.
The other member mentioned that the situation of infection differs from region to region. On the other hand the economy has to be cared.
There is the fact that unemployment rate has been increasing.
I think that it is difficult to make balanced choice. I hope vaccine is completed and distributed soon.

The report of the meeting on 22/7/2020

Four members got together tonight.
First of all, we talked about our club "STIE".
Why we can't keep a stable members? We asked ourself.
We can get some newcomers through the club's home page. But almost all of them consist of the young generation and they tend to leave the club after 3 - 5 sessions.
What are the cause? We further asked ourself.
1. The young generation has a job and they do not afford to attend the club twice a week. (twice a week is a little bit hard for young)
2. If they were to be a regular member, they have to do some task as a regular member. (they may feel burden)

1. twice a week $B"*(B once a week.
2. twice a week $B"*(B
The first session in a week is an existing method. The second session in a week is completely free talking. (no chairman, no topics, no report, and no everything.)
3. The trial period is freedom, but have limited time. (the newcomer get used to STIE, or not)

But we started a new style Yuki san suggested recently.
We are thinking about how to spread while doing the new style.
Actually, there are a lot of elderly people who want to study English conversation but we don't have an opportunity to guide and contact them except HP.
Are there any ideas to guide this STIE to the middle and elderly?

Then, we moved to Today's topic.
$B!z(BSegway shuts down scooter production after 19 years
The article is about Segway.
After we read out loud the article one by one, We answered questions below.

1.What do you think about this article?
One of the members said segway reminds her of ex-president Bush and ex-prime minister Koizumi.
Another member said this ending is predictable.
None of the members has tried segway.

2.Can you think of any other revolutionary products that were a flop?
MD(MiniDisc)
Amazon phone, windows phone, google glass
some video game console

After the session, I checked the park where you can try segway.
According to the website, there is a segway tour. It looks fun but it costs \8,000 per person. It is too expensive for me. I don't think I will try segway.

I took part in the session only for 30 minutes, however I enjoyed talking with the members, and gained a lot of knowledge. It was awesome!

The report of the meeting on 8/7/2020

There were four attendees at the session on Wednesday, July 8.
We did not have to split.

First, each made a short speech, as usual.
Then, we moved to today's topic:
"Ontario Kids to Learn Coding and Finance from Age Six".

The article describes that learning about computer code and finance in their early stage of life would help kids to get jobs and be successful in the modern world.
That is understandable. In this complicated society with IT, both skills of coding and finacial planning may be very important factors to survive.

Nowadays, coding or financial planning is a specialty of AI.
A robot adviser has already existed, and banks or stock companies offer it to their customers.
Maybe, therefore, we should not only rely on ready-made softwares we are given at all, but we should consider our asset buildiing by ourselves. If we have abilities to check something by ourselves, our future would be lighter.

I heard that once you have saved a certain amount of money, it is effective to get the money itself to work for you in asset formation.
Students in Ontario will learn the basics of such skills.
As the social is changing, the curriculum also might have to catch up with the change.

The report of the meeting on 27/6/2020

What she wants to eat is boiled locust in soy sauce. She said the food looks gross but heard it tastes good.
The other said he had eaten it before, and its crisp texture was really good.
Another participant is a mayonnaise lover who puts mayonnaise on every type of food, and she said, especially rice food prepared by mixing mayonnaise and rice tastes excellent.
She also said what is most worrisome right now is the coronavirus. In particular, she lives in the neighborhood of Tokyo, so she is apprehensive because the number of infected people is increasing rapidly.

$B!&(BWhat images are in your mind when you hear the word 'art'?
$B!&(BHow good were you at art?
$B!&(BWhat kind of art do you like?

Another member wants to buy new glasses.
The fourth member said about the digital governance of the government. It is so weak and poor.
This time, the government provided us 100 thousand yen to all Japanese as a relief money of the coronavirus. The online application made trouble and it takes more time than handwritten application. I think that on the emergency, the sense of speed is always demanded.

After that, we talked about "Apologies"

I felt 4, or 5 members will make the best class on STIE session.
Thank you.

The report of the meeting on 23/5/2020

There were nine attendees at the session on Saturday, May 23.
We split nine into two groups.

First, each made a short speech, as usual.
Then, we moved to today's topic.
"How to make an effective to-do list".

A "to-do list", also called an "action list" in the article, is a list of work that you need to finish at the end of the day.
Using the article as a basis for discussion, we discussed a lot about the "to-do list".

When you make a list, it is effective for you to write down all the tasks. In the business scene, you should prevent being cause of trouble to others with your delay. The list helps you avoid forgetting some to do, and finish them smoothly. However, too many tasks make you loose motivation. So it is better to celect less than 10 important tasks in order to easily control. And it is also important to prioritize and make each task simple.

Rewarding yourself after finishing each task is another way to keep motivation. Eating a piece of chocolate is one of them. Chocolate has effect to boost your concentration, memory and cognitive function, although you have to be careful not to eat chocolate too much. You may get fat.
Purchase of something is another reward, but also be careful not to be a shopping addict. Above all else, feeling accomplished itself seems to be a better reward. So the article recommends to start with easier ones.

If your goal is too far away, making short goals is helpful to keep motivation. When you reach the first step, you can enjoy a small sense of accomplishment, which leads you to go ahead toward the next step.

The report of the meeting on 16/5/2020

Today we had 8 members plus one coming later so at the beginning we split into 2 groups.

Session as usual started with 'what's new' that soon turned into coronavirus news update and comparing situation and restrictions in Poland and Japan. It seems that in Poland we have more people infected, despite strict rules and early closed borders.

Today's topic was also closely connected with global covid-19 pandemic. It was about contact tracing apps that many goverments introduced or are planning to. Those apps are ment to reduce spread of coronavirus by tracking people who had contact with infected person. Although helpful, they pose new problems. For example:
- what data is collected - person locaton, contacts from addess book, pictures etc.
- who will have access to those informations (goverments, developers, 3rd party companies) and how will they be used
- what if there is a data leak
Some concern errors in apps themselves:
- when measuringn distance between people they don't detect wall separating them
- faulty distance measurement between contaiment place and place where person is at the moment
There is still not many information about contact tracing apps that are released. Researchers claim there is no clear evidence that they reduce spread of covid 19.

The report of the meeting on 9/5/2020

As a total of 9 people participated in the session, they divided into two.

The central theme was how to deal with the coronavirus.
Basically, BBQ on the riverside should refrain.
In particular, it is sufficient that local governments ban access to relevant areas.

For places such as supermarkets where people tend to gather, it is desirable to limit the number of people who can enter to prevent infection.

When it comes to professional sports, it's very lonely and dull unless athletes and fans are united in the same place.
However, on the other hand, it is not proper to put the spectators in the stadium because it becomes perilous.
Once the infection explosion occurs there, it could be out of control.
It is a difficult problem, and there is no appropriate answer.

$B"!(BBest Year for Music
According to a survey conducted by the UK radio station, 1991 was the best year for music. Because many of the listeners of the radio station were teenagers in 1991 and have great memories of that year. People tend to enjoy listening to songs they heard while growing up. We go through a lot of changes during these developmental years. We're incredibly hormonal and sensitive, so if we hear a song we really love, it's more likely to stay with us forever.

After we read out loud the article one by one, we talked about our favorite songs, the difference between Opera and Musical, Hymn and Gospel. That was a very informative session.

The report of the meeting on 29/4/2020

The participants of tonight session were 9 members included one visitor.
We are under the new coronavirus crisis now, almost school, and company have been closing now and we have been forced to stay home.
How should we spend the extra free time?
Maybe it depends on their own thinking.
By the way, the young generation members of STIE tend to increase recently.
I think that they haven't wanted to be a waste of time the extra free time.
And they must have found this STIE as a one effective way.

Today's topic was "discrimination".
But this topic was not well-much with the young members maybe. I felt a little bit generation gap.
From next time I should make a topic which is common for all generations, I thought.

There were nine attendees at the session on April 18.
We have had new comers recently, STIE is getting more and more lively. Right now, we are facing a pandemic and in a difficult situation, but I think that STIE has much to do with it.
Let's take good care of our health while striving to become more stronger.

Today's main topic was where do you want you go when corona virus panic will end. After we divided two groups, then we talked about a travel and what the international society should to be in the future.
There is a high possibility that new viruses will apper even after coronavirus disappers, so we need to develop more science and technology and create a social system to stop pandemic.
I hope that the day will come when we no need to be afraid of a virous.

I hope that joining the session makes participants feel better.

The report of the meeting on 1/4/2020

There were six attendees at the session on Wednesday, April 1.
First, each made a short speech, as usual.
Then, we moved to today's topic.
"Italy mayors scold people not following lockdown (28th March, 2020)".
We exchanged opinions about the five questions relating to the topic.
1. What did you think when you read the headline?
2. What do you think of when you hear the word 'lockdown'?
3. How strict should a lockdown be?
4. What can people do at home during a lockdown?
5. How can a lockdown affect our health?

It may be too tough for people to stay home for many days. But it may also be the best way to prevent the serious spread of the coronavirus. So when lockdown is enforced, it should be rather strict, and people should follow it.
However, there are harmful effects too, such as a lack of physical exercise, irritation, DV, and so on.
People should find something enjoyable through the internet and others. We can talk with friends using communication tooles. We also can have more time to spend with family members. New business or new lifestyle might be created, such as Telework, Remortwork, etc.
I hope we can overcome the terrible situation with Covid-19 as soon as possible.

-Tokyo, Milan, Paris, New York can be said to be the most fashionalble cities, from which new fashion is created and transmitted to the world.
-Most members chose functional clothing. However, we expect it includes a refined sense of taste.
-So far, the fashion industry makes the trend of the year, but gradually young people have been creating their own fashion, which is growing to a trend and catching on over the world. Cosplay costume may be one of them. Young people enjoy wearing costumes of characters in animation films or comics.
-Zozosuit provided by Zozotown (an online shop) is very unique. It is a suit-style mesure which you can measure your sizes by wearing it. It is very convenient when you buy clothes with the right size from on-line shope. Unfortunately, zozosuit is not for sale now.

To summarize opinions in the case of question No.3, it is a very effective way for companies to use influencial celebrities for advertisement of their goods, because many people want to be like them. Posessing those items makes people feel they could be nice persons. However, in order to make a realistic decision, we should not just follow the impression created by celebrities, but we should consider quarity, price, and other factors before purchase of goods.

The preface of the incident was that her friend slapped on her behind in a playful way. Alchohol may make people too bold and crazy.

By the way, according to a member's explanation, a few decades ago when Japan's economy was in the bubble boom, there were many discos where young adults enjoyed disco dancing. Now the name of disco disappeared, and they call such a place "nightclub" or just "club".

The report of the meeting on 26/10/2019

In today's meeting, we talked about many kind topics.
Ruggby world cup, Nationalism, Kantou area flood disaster, Living cost and history of Tokyo, etc$B!&!&!&(B.
Now, Japan is holding Ruggby world cup. Thistime world cup tach us many things, humanity, brave mind, manner, philanthropy. When I watch the scene of many different nation people enjoy supporting one suports peacefully.
I felt that to make and enjoy such mood is most important part of doing sports, and I want to say thanks to ruggbey players who show us gentle mind by good orderd behavior. I respect such kind of sports player.
Most important topic is Kanto area flood disaster. Kanto area has met three times huge bank brakes in this year. I have watched one suffer said his mind was closing to break. Many people is in very hard situation now.
I don't say $B!H(BDon't cry$B!I!H(BCheer up$B!*!I(B. I want say $B!H(BPlease cry as much as you want , and after that, you take it slow to stand up again$B!I(B.

The report of the meeting on 19/10/2019

There were 6 members at the meeting on October 19th. After we made short speeches, we talked about the topics.

$B!&(BStudying English (The methods you have tried, your favorite way of learning).
$B!&(BPlease tell us about the kind of news you are into.

We talked about the news which is Kobe teacher accused of bullying colleagues. This is controversial issue to discuss in Japan right now, so it was good to share each other's views on that.

One member shared his method of learning English. What surprised me was he started learning it seriously on his own just a few years ago, and his English is great!
I'm so impressed.

We might lose drive for learning sometimes, and it's very tough to keep on studying, but I believe attending this session stimulates us to get the motivation back when we lost the drive for English.

I really appreciate the group setting where I can practice my English!

The report of the meeting on 12/10/2019

There were four attendees at the session on October 12.
It was a terrible day with Typhoon No.19, which caused tremendously strong wind and heavy rain, moving through Tokai, Kanto, Tohoku areas to offshore Hokkaido. There are many places which suffered serious damages by this typhoon.

We started the session with each member's short speech about repapering "shoji" paper sliding screens, tatoo-less athletes of Japanese rugby team, cashless payment, and so on. Then, we moved to today's topic.

Today's topic was "Barbies and Gender". Barbie Dall's image was once a white girl with unrealistically perfect body, which made children misunderstood that it's a beauty standard. But now a diversified line of dolls with more natural bodies started to be sold, and children can choose hair color, skin color, clothing, accessories, genders, one in a wheelchair, and others. This kind of dalls would help children understand that the world is full of different people.

I'm very interested in this topic. However, I guess those Barbie dalls might not be a big seller in Japan with a little conservative society.

There were four attendees at the session on October 5.
We were talking about topics that come up during conversation and didn't go to a lot of questions I posted.

By the way, this week we have All Soul's Day in my country. It's 1-11. Before this day people clean graves of their family members and decorate it with flowers and candles. On 1 of November we go to visit graves to pray for those who passed away.

The report of the meeting on 28/09/2019

There were 5 participants in the session.
As usual, each participant talked about the current situation and matters of interest.

Next, we discussed the theme of this week, $B!H(BFood.$B!I(B
It was pointed out that many meals offered at fast-food restaurants are often biased in nutritional value.
Also, once hamburgers made of meat with expiration date was sold in China, it became a significant social problem.

On the other hand, fast food restaurants are still very popular.
Maybe because many modern people lead a busy life and do not have enough time to eat. At the fast-food restaurant, we can eat casually and without waiting.

If we can hire a chef for ourselves, we would like the chef to make Japanese cuisine, especially kaiseki cuisine.
There was also an opinion that they wanted the chef to cook various dishes from every country around the world.

The report of the meeting on 21/09/2019

There were four attendees at the session on Sept 21.

First, we talked about what's been going on recently.
We talked about trip to Northern part of Kanto region, cashless payment and taking a PC class.

Then, we moved to Today's topic.
The article we used was about Finland's universal basic income trial.
This trial conducted from 2017 to 2018. 2000 unemployed people got a monthly payment without any conditions. The purpose of this trial was to find if unconditional monthly payments would help them find work.
The results came from just the first year of the 2-year trial. People became healthier and happier thanks to a basic income but they did not secure a position in the workplace.

In the near future, many workers would lose their jobs because of AI. To avoid an unprecedented crisis, we're going to have to find a new solution. Universal basic income might be a solution.

We talked about "What's new" and "Today's topic" as usual.
Today's topic was the word "One coin".
All members like the word "One coin".
"One coin" give us nice sound and comfortably feeling. Especially, a shop named "Hyakkin" is essential shops now, We can get many kinds goods with small unit at there. For example, brushes, tapes, batteries, note-books, slippers, even mousetraps.
Saying about restaurant for "One coin", it's a $B!H(BConveyor belt sushi$B!I(B. Nowadays we can find this restaurant here and there. The price is just 100 yen only and many kinds sushi make us eat our stomach fill and satisfy.

The report of the meeting on 14/09/2019

There were six attendees at the session on September 14.
First, We started from "What's new topic". One of topicswas about the typhoon which hitted on ToKyo and Chiba area. It has caused havy damage to the Kanto region, and still now, lifeline is stopping in many place.
Last year, Kansaiarea had suffered same damage. I felt that environment of Japan has changing recently because of greenhouse effect. so I am worried about the future environment of my country.
The other one of topics was about "Tapioka drink".
Tapioka tea came from Taiwan, and became very popular in Japan, especially among young women. There have been built many Tapioka drink shops in big town of Japan.
This trend also make some problems. One of that is deposited tea cups. Many people tend to throw away a plustic cup around there after they drink up Tapioka tea. I hope that everyone keep manner and enjoy stylish drink.

Next, we move onto today's topic which about "Cows and Climate Change". Do you like to eat meat$B!)(B Japanese people life style has changing and almost Japanese people eat meat rather than some decade ago. To product eat meal makes CO2, and that may cause greenhous effect$B!%(B Carnivorous and huge typhoons may be relate each other.

The report of the meeting on 11/09/2019

There were four members at today's session.
After each short speech, we moved to today's topic.
Today's topic was about Water solutions without a grain of salt. We talked about a new technology to gain drinkable water using only solar energy.
I think this technology which independent on fossil fuel is very good. But, I thought the idea of a member, "energy is need to serve watar" is a big problem.
Thank you.

The report of the meeting on 31/08/2019

There were six attendees at the session on August 31.
We started the session with each member's short speech. Then, we read an article and had a discussion related to it.

Today's topic was "Anti-heat measure may have opposite effect".
The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be held in August, 2020. It'll be pretty humid and hot in mid-summer.
So, Japan is now applying a special coating to roads, including the Olympic marathon course, to reduce surface temperatures. However, according to the survey, this special anti-heat coating may not be effective.

We do not understand why it will be held in a hot summer.
However, we discussed if there are any solutions. The members' opinions are as follows:
The locations should be moved to some cooler places in Hokkaido.
The marathon race should be held in midnight.
How about making cool mist with the machine from place to place?
Free water should be provided to athletes and spectators.
Field sports and a marathon race should be held in a very early morning, etc. etc.

I hope it will be much cooler in summer, 2020 than in summer this year.
Are you longing for the Olympic games?
As for me, although I'm not seriously longing for it, I expect that badminton players will make good fights, especially an ace player, Kento Momota. I'm looking forward to seeing his plays in the Olympic games, of course, on TV.

The report of the meeting on 24/08/2019

There were 6 members at the session on August 24. After we made short speeches, we talked about the topics.

$B!&(BWhich languages are the most difficult to learn?
$B!&(BWhat do you like, or not like?
$B!&(BIs it important for husbands to know how to cook?
$B!&(BDo you have any interesting stories about staying somewhere other than your house, like a hotel or hostel?

It was fun to share our opinions in terms of the topics. I think we have something in common. For example all of us are interested in English, but on the other hand everyone has different interests and background, so that makes the conversation interesting! I had a good time talking with them as usual. Thank you.

The report of the meeting on 17/08/2019

There were five attendees at the session on August 17.
We started the session with each member's short speech, and then, we read an article and had a discussion related to it.

Today's topic was "UK Man Collected 9,000 Beer Cans Over 40 Years."
He spent a lot of money to buy beer cans, and needed places to keep them. His collection was a kind of investment to gain big money. But after all, he could not get an appropriate return on his investment. He sold some, gave some to others and keeps the rest.

Members have experiences to collect something; for example, comics, magnets, cans of soft drink, stickers of popular characters, and so on, in their childhood. But those things were not collected for future money-making potential.

If you were to start collecting something for making money, what would it be? They say they'd like to collect memorial stamps, paintings, photographs, hanging scrolls, Japanese clothes, etc.
However, if they want to sell those things at higher prices, they have to be connoisseurs in the purchase stage.

Anyway, I hear that having a hobby is better than being less active without any hobby.

The report of the meeting on 31/07/2019

Five people participated in the regular meeting on July 31st.

First of all, we discussed whether the rights of the animals were sufficiently considered.

As the owners decide to keep the pets, it is important to have full responsibility for their lives until they die. Some owners love their pets when they are puppies, but when they become adult dogs they don't take them for walks at all. There a lot of pets left in an abandoned state. Many livestock kept as human food are bred in poor environments. For example, a cow spends the whole life in a tiny hut.

Next, we discussed the issue of whether society can cope with violent crimes.

In Japan, there are strict restrictions on possession of guns, so crime with guns rarely occurs. Compared with the United States, social security in Japan is generally maintained. However, it is necessary to keep in mind that security must be always maintained since violent crimes such as the recent arson in Kyoto occur occasionally.

There were six attendees at the session on July 27.

First,we talked about what's been going on recently. One of the attendees shared the news about Europe's second heat wave with us. Some countries in Europe saw a record high temperature. We need to think about global warming seriously.

Then, we moved to Today's topic. The article we used was about Starbucks opens its first U.S. "Signing Store" in Washington, D.C. They provide employment opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people. Now they have such stores in Malaysia, and China.

Everyone applauded Starbucks approach because everyone should be included in society. Some said If they have a chance, they would like to go to the singing store. I hope Starbucks will open its "Signing Store" in Japan soon.

The report of the meeting on 13/07/2019

There were six attendees at the session on July 13.
We started today's session from What's new Topic as usual.
After all, I feel that there are a lot of topics of the Internet and electronics device.

Next, We moved onto Today's topic which about some U.S company has begun to allow people to work with pet dogs in the United State$B!%(B
It is hard to imagin going to work with pets at work in Japan. Many members opinion was that they would not be able to bring their dog to work, as dogs would interfere with their work. I think this is a symbol of the difference between Japanese and American thinking about work.
We mainly discussed the difference work environments in Japan and abroad and attitudes toward work. We also talked about emplyment forms such as the lifetime employment system.
I think that it will be more efficient to create a comortable workplace that incorporates both good parts.

There were 7 members at the session on July 3.
After we made short speech, we divided us into two groups, and talked about the topics.

In my group, the members talked about movies, online lessons, and liver.
One of the members enjoys watching movies on TV. I think it's a great way to improve their listening.

Online lessons are becoming very popular in order to learn another languages, so it was interesting to share each other's opinions on that.
And one member found chicken liver very tasty! The story made me want to try it, I don't like it though!

I had a really good time chatting with them. Thank you everyone!

The report of the meeting on 29/06/2019

There were five attendees at the session on June 29.
We started the session with each member's short speech, and next, we had a discussion about drone delivery by Amazon near future.

According to Amazon, self-flying drones are safe and will be able to avoid people, clotheslines, and other objects when landing. They are electric, are able to fly 24 kilometers, and can make deliveries weighing up to 2.3 kilograms in just 30 minutes.

I think one-day delivery is short enough for customers, but my opinion is not correct. There seem to be some shoppers who want to get goods as soon as possible. However, Amazon has to wait for regulatory approval before using drones for delivery.

Technology goes so fast that it is hard for us to keep up with it. I wonder why people want to get goods so quickly. Some members say drone-delivery would be very helpful in the delivery business because of the labor shortage. And it's easy for drones to carry things to remote country areas, mountainous areas or solitary islands.

On the other hand, if there would be so many drones flying in the air, aero-traffic jams would occur. There would happen crashes between drones and birds. Hacker might control destinations of drones and steal packages.

Drone technology has surprisingly progressed, and has already been used in other industries. Members described that they are used for patrolling, monitoring, rescuing, detecting survivors in devastated areas, inspecting somewhere that humans cannot enter, and others.

Anyway, drones seem to have a lot of potentials. However, regarding delivery, I still think it's risky to use them.

The report of the meeting on 15/06/2019

There were 5 participants in this session.
As always, we talked about our interests one by one in turn.

First, we discussed whether the Japanese lost interest in politics.
Some participants said, "the Japanese are not interested in politics."
They pointed out that people have a feeling of giving up to politics, and the voting rate is low.

Most participants stated that $B#w(Be should have set term limits for politicians.
If politicians have been in power for a long time, they will have great power, and various problems will occur.

Next, we talked about the right to choose the gender of babies.
If the country gives this right to the nationals, it will break down the balance of the number of men and women. For example, many people who can not get married come out. So couples should not have the right to choose the gender of their children.

We talked about public transportation with 6 members tonight.
Q).
Which do you prefer buses or trains as public transportation?
There are many reasons bellow and finally, 4 members within 6 chose trains.
A)
Buses have no rail, so we can go anywhere.
Trains run on the fixed railroad tracks therefor they will be possible a no driver running.
Buses are a low cost but instead, they will take time.
Buses have no toilet but all the train is equipped it.
Trains are safer than buses. Recently bus drivers are too busy and tend to tire.
Buses are controlled by the situation of the road, but buses are always on time.
Trains are more suitable for long distance trips than buses and comfortable.
etc

The report of the meeting on 25/05/2019

On May 25, seven members attended the session.
At first, we talked "What's new topic". One of topics was Karaoke Box. Nowadays, there are many interesting Karaoke Box in Japane, it has been introducted new system and food menu. I think this evolution will continue from now on.
Some member prepared speach paper and talked about his experience in abroad. I think such attitudes are expected to help improve.

Next$B!"(Bwe move on to today's theme "Food loss". In developed country, huge amount of foods has been wasted. Since we can lower prices by eliminating waste, I believe that making an effort to eliminate waste will benefit us.
Another theme was "If you go to somewhere in this summer, where do you want to go?" After all, there seemed to be a lot of people who want to go to cool areas during the summer. It seems that some member go to the family for a long time.

The report of the meeting on 11/05/2019

There were five attendees at the session on March 30.

After each member's short speech, we had a discussion about "Millennials on saving money". It was new for me to hear the word "Millennials". They are people who were born in the 1980s, 1990s, or early 2000s, and have grown up with the internet. According to the article, Millennials tend not to save money for emergency funds. We discussed the reason and whether saving money is important or not.

We think there are some reasons. The Great Recession started with the US subprime mortgage crisis is one of them. And with the lack of jobs, Millennials' income has been quite low, which made it difficult to save money. Or their way of thinking about how to spend money is different from conventional ideas. They may want to spend their money for things they want to buy now, or events, such as travel, aesthetic clinic, gourmet food, and so on, not for unclear things or events in the future.

One mentioned that in the case of Western developed countries, the style of spending money is significantly different from that in Japan. Getting a loan is very common in those countries. They get loans for cars, houses, education, and so on. For even daily food, they use credit cards. The idea of saving money seems to be rare among them. However, it is risky for them to depend on money which they may get in the future.

If you save 10 thousand yen each month, in 12 months, you will have 120 thousand yen in total. In 10 years, 1.2 million yen. Although today's interest is really low, and some young people believe that emergency funds are not necessary, you should save money little by little until at least an amount equivalent to three-month cost of living. Even though you don't have any events to spend it near future, you may use it as seed money to produce more money. Anyway, we need to have financial literacy in order to secure our financial stability.
(Yuki)

The report of the meeting on 27/04/2019

The session had five participants.

There were arguments for and against the impact of computer games on children.
Some games have educational effects on children, but there are a lot of harmful games, especially in online games. As a result, "we should keep children away from computer games as much as possible" was the dominant view.

Although there was an opinion that national regulations should be permitted for Internet content, government interference, such as current regulations in China, could be a serious problem.

The difference between those who use the Internet freely and those who do not use it is a big problem. Especially in the coming years, people who can not connect to the Internet and people who can not use the Internet will suffer greater loss in their lives because everything is digitized.

The report of the meeting on 06/04/2019

On April 6 , seven members attended the session.
At first, we talked "What's new topic".

Next, we talked about today's theme, "College admissions scam".
In U.S, Celebrities and CEOs are among dozen of wealthy parents charged in the scam. They're accused of trying to fast-track their chidren into the country's top universities.
We talked about this news based on these questios,

Most members had doubts about "school credentialism".
In order to eliminate injustice, society will need to change first. Society is gradually changing, but the academic background is still strong, so I think it will be difficult to eliminate such injustices in the future.

The report of the meeting on 30/03/2019

On March 30, six members, including a newcomer, attended the session.
After each member's short speech, we had a discussion about "Vending Machine".

At the Tokyo Metro subway station, there seems to be an unusual canned coffee vending machine - "Vending Train"- which looks like the front of the train, because it was made from old train parts.
Now that reuse is getting popular in Japan, it is no wonder that parts of old trains were used for vending machines.

Compared to other countries overseas, Japan is much safer and people are very moderate. It is rare that vending machines are broken, or that goods are stolen from them. So the existence of vending machines indicates how safe that place is.
And we can buy goods from vending machines without communication with sales clerks, which is good for some persons who consider communication bothersome. Technology to sense the weight of each coin and to read one thousand yen bill enabled to sell in that way.
There are some other unique vending machines; for example, ones for ramen, seals, eggs, cell-phones, wedding-ring kits, and so on.
Anyway, the vending machines are really convenient.

The report of the meeting on 16/03/2019

There were 6 participants in this session.

In Japan, According to$B!!(Bthe statistics, the number of people eating ice cream is increasing in winter. Japanese people think of ice cream as delicious food to eat rather than a cold one, because they spend their time in a cozy and warm room in winter.
In particular, manufacturers are also making efforts to sell them, selling limited ice creams each season to encourage consumers to buy.
In addition, people can be enjoying the taste for a long time because the ice cream is not easy to melt in winter.

Next, professional athletes discussed whether they made too much money.
For example, Cristiano Ronaldo, a professional soccer player who is said to be the most earning athlete in the world, has an annual income of over 10 billion yen.
Therefore, opinions that some athletes made too much money were dominant.

The report of the meeting on 23/02/2019

On February 23, six members attended the session.
At first, we started from "What's new topic".
We talked about new topics and news by turn.
One of them is "donation", an organ donation or donation of blood. In Japan, sometime difficult to accept donation, especially child. We might change such a situation as soon as possible.

Next, We moved on to today's topic about "animal trading". Every member anserd to these questins.
$B!{!!(BDo you like the animal ?
$B!{!!(BDo you have any pet ?
$B!{!!(BWhat do you feel about this news ?
$B!{!!(BHow do you think about animal trading ?
Some member said that we should not ban the animal trading, because if we ban it, kids could't watch the rare animals. It would be correct, but we should treat animals carefully and frendly.
We must not forget animals are not thing , they have life like us.

The report of the meeting on 16/02/2019

On February 16, six members attended the session.
After each member's short speech, we had a discussion about English words that come from the Philippines. They are boondocks, cooties, mani-pedi, and yo-yo, which respectively mean;
a place that is a long way from the nearest town,
a child's game term for an imaginary germ or disease that one can catch by touching a person who has,
a beauty treatment comprising both a manicure and a pedicure, and
a toy made of two connected circular parts with a string.

It is said that the Philippines is a country with the world's third largest English-speaking population. This is understandable, considering the history of the country. For a long time, it had been an American territory (from the end of the 19th century through into the middle of the 20th century).
Nowadays, there are a lot of online English conversation schools which hire Filipino teachers, although some speak with a little strong accent.

One says, "Learning another language is like becoming another person." Regarding this statement, there are pros and cons. As for me, I agree, because I feel I may be a little more agressive while speaking English. But of course, I am the same person as me speaking Japanese. Anyway, through learning another language, my world is getting wider and wider.

The report of the meeting on 02/02/2019

There were six participants.
After the small talk session was over, we discussed three topics.

First, we argued about the proverb "Perseverance brings success." A majority of participants believe, "If we continue to work hard while withstanding hardships, our wish will come true." On the other hand, there were opinions that it is essential to give up because our life is finite and sometimes we need a decision to quit.

Next, we talked about whether the gap between rich and poor has been expanding. The gap between rich and poor is actually increasing and becoming a significant social problem. In particular, it is very problematic that a handful of rich people make up the majority of the world's wealth.

Finally, we argued whether the rich people should help the poor people or not. In conclusion, the rich should help the poor, and that is also their duty. The way to help poor people is not just about donating money but also giving personal computers to impoverished areas, building the necessary facilities and so forth.

The report of the meeting on 19/01/2019

On January 19, six members including a newcomer attended the session. (One came a little later, and one left a little earlier.) After exchanging self-introductions with each other, we moved to Today's topic.

The title of the article was "Common English Words From the Internet".
On a daily basis, internet users have invented a lot of unique words such as facepalm, selfie, spam, and troll. They are very interesting and hit the point, mirroring the society. Among them, "troll" seems to be very new for most of the members.
Originally, a troll is a giant or a dwarf, who can use magic, appearing in the ancient stories.
A "troll" on the Internet creates trouble by posting vicious comments or fictional stories. He (She) wants to make people angry and to put them in a very serious situation.
Recently, "fake news" by trolls have been controversial. The number of such news seems to be increasing on the Internet. So when we read an article on a website and feel it strange, we should doubt its reliability. Especially if we want to introduce it to other people, we should check similar articles on other websites.

Anyway, it is hard for me to keep up with a global Internet society.
