Report 2016

The report of the meeting on 24/12/2016

We had five attendees at today’s session.
Firstly we did “What’s new” as usual.
The first person mentioned the physical test of her stomach. According to her she used to take the checkup of the stomach before. At that time a doctor put an endoscope through the mouth, but this time another doctor did through the nose. Putting the endoscope through the nose is more comfortable than through the mouse, she said. Another person also took this test.
The second one explained the change of profile picture. The new one is the banner of a feudal lord, Kenssin Uesugi who is famous for the battle with another famous feudal lord, Shingen Takeda. There is the just one Chinese letter on the banner, namely “毘”, which is the first letter of the Buddhist deity,”毘沙門天” or Vaiśravaṇa in Sanskrit. According to his explanation, Vaiśravaṇa is thought to be the king of battle. Kenshin Uesugi respected this deity.
The third person talked about the trip to Singapore and Malaysia with his wife. He enjoyed the trip very much because the weather was always fine during the trip. This was one good point. Another lucky thing was that the hotel room was upgraded without any extra cost. A bath room was excellent, and a balcony was very wide. He took many pictures and he wants to show them others, but he has had not enough time to arrange them. He said he would show us them and elaborate his trip in the near future. Others look forward to seeing them and listening to his story.
The fourth person touched the Christmas Eve. She did not do anything special to celebrate Christmas. Only thing was she made boiled chicken with sweet vinegar and soy sauce. Usually families in Japan celebrate Christmas with cake. But she refrains from eating cakes or sweets for her health.
The last one gave others the story about KFC fried chicken. Now families in Japan celebrate Christmas with a fried chicken and cake. This general trend started in 19070s. A manager of KFC got an idea to promote selling his company's product, “party barrel”. One day when he was in his shop, he overheard that a couple of foreigner talked about roast turkey. They said they missed it. The manager dreamed an idea, waked up in the midnight and jotted down it. He launched the promotion of “Kentucky for Christmas”. The promotion resulted in success. But this general tendency is limited in Japan. Other countries do not celebrate Christmas with KFC.

Then we went into the today’s topic—“New store lets you shop, walk out and pay later”. First we read the article in turn, and then answered the questions and the line where the clue is shown. Questions and answers are bit difficult, so we used more time than expected. In the discussion task, the opinion was divided.
The new shopping system Amazon is planning to introduce has two aspects, positive side and negative side. Amazon Go might be convenient because we don’t need wait in checkout line at the shop. When the line is long and we have to wait for long time, we feel frustrated. The introduction of Amazon Go will save our time.
But on the other hand, many attendees pointed out there will be risk in the new shopping habit. For example, many people will be involved in crimes such as fraud. If the personal data in a smartphone is stolen, it is very easy for criminals transfer all money in the account to another one.
Technology makes advance so quickly and it is hard to catch up with it. Where are we going in the future?

The report of the meeting on 17/12/2016

There were five attendees including me (a chairperson) at the meeting on December 17.
First, we talked about what's new, or how the week was, which is summarized as follows:
1) The first member said that he had watched soccer games of the Club Championship in Japan two days before. The level of that championship is higher than that of the World Cup. Kashima Antlers will go to the final game. However, it would be a little difficult for Kashima Antlers to win, because their opponent team with Cristiano Ronaldo,a MVP, is very strong.
2) The second one firstly talked about schedule of FETS meetings. The last meeting of 2016 will be held on December 24. The first one of 2017 will be held on January 7. And he also talked about the result of his TOEIC test. It was not as good as he expected. He thinks that time management is very important for the reading test.
3) The third one talked about her busy week. On Tuesday she went to Nagoya to sell an old violin made in France. It was played by her son long time go, and now no one plays it. Unfortunately she could not sell it, because an estimate by a shop owner of musical instrument was much cheaper than that she expected. It is old, and nowadays violins made in foreign countries seem not to be popular in Japan. On Wednesday she enjoyed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in a theater. On Thursday She went to a mobile-phone shop to buy a new iPhone. On Saturday she enjoyed a mandolin concert.
4) The fourth one told about an incident which had happened in her country within the last few days. Protesters blockaded the parliament in support of opposition party's unhappy about new rules restricting press reporting. It is believed to be the first protest of its kind in the parliament for 10 years. It is a Christmas season now, so people are very busy to prepare many things. She hopes that situation will be settled soon. ( for more information → http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38347674 )
5) The fifth one said she had done nothing much. She just went to the civic auditorium and enjoyed a mandolin concert as another member said before.

Next we moved to Today's topic, "Wisdom Teeth". First, we read the article in turns. Secondly, we shared our opinions and discussed about wisdom teeth, dentists, how to keep teeth in a good condition, and so on. By the way, according to a member, rinsing mouth with water solution of "Isodine (a kind of antiseptic solution used for mouth wash or gargle)" is effective in keeping teeth clean. I had thought Isodine is just for gargle...

The fourth one told that her power source of PC went down. Then, each member asked one of the members about how to study about TOEIC test.

Then, we talked with members about today’s topic “ Train conductors in Japan make a lot of strange hand gesture”. Japanese train conductor’s gesture and rule are different from foreign ones. So, some foreigners may feel it funny. The feeling is equivalent to Japanese in foreign country and foreigners in Japan so that some Japaneses feel American people to do gesture over. Bus drivers and train conductors to the same gesture. According to web site, the conductor in New York has one gesture and one point. The train conductor in Japan is unique. But the conductor in Japan reduces 30 percent accident by their gesture and pointing. The conductor’s gesture and pointing seem very funny for foreigners, but the ways are good ways to prevent the accident of human’s error 30 %.
There was a bad bus driver who had driven with having operated (ポケモン) who was arrested, but there are actually serious drivers.
Finger operating shows different from each countries custom. For example, crossing finger and making a circle with thumb and index finger etc. Finger index is different from American and Germany. For example, in case of that, people show 123 with finger. When a Japanese shows money with finger, they show OK with a circle with thumb and index finger, but Germans and Americans show it by rubbing with thumb and index finger, etc.

The report of the meeting on 17/09/2016

Five members attended to the today’s session. Here is report on it.

The first part of the session is “What’s new. Talk anything.”
The first attendee reported the trip to Finland in brief. She took a lot of pictures while traveling, however she did not transfer them to PC, so she could not show the others them. She traveled seven days including transferring from Japan to Finland. Main place of staying was Helsinki, the capital of Finland, where she looked around many tourists spots. Weather was very good while staying there. In the evening and morning it was bit cold, while in the daytime the temperature went up to 28 degree Celsius.
The next person mentioned about the blueberry which he planted in his garden. Every summer morning he picks up some berries. The blueberry has good effects to health, for example it improves eyesight or suppresses a symptom of hay-fever. After he took them regularly, his eyesight has got better.
The topic of the third person was how to arrange the pictures. We took a lot of pictures in the past but left them. We used to use an analog camera, so all pictures are developed and printed out at a photo shop. She wants to put them away. She thought that only necessary pictures would be kept, and unimportant ones would be throw away. However it was bit difficult to make up mind of which one being thrown away. Finally she scanned all printed pictures by scanner and save them in the computer. She asked the other members the best way of arranging them.
The fourth one reported several problems which European countries are facing now. One of them is that immigrants are increasing, and that against them nationalism is gaining power and influence. She introduced an example; when a drive drove the truck, a number of immigrants ambushed it and got in the track. They wanted to pass through a border between countries to enter Britain. Another problem is that terrorists’ attacks happen more frequently. The raise of nationalism has turned to international trend, the other member commented on her report.
The last person is planning to sit TOEIC in November. He sat it before, but the result was unsatisfied. Recently he has had more free time than before, so he started studying TOEIC again. According to him the contents of it has changed a bit, and it has become more difficult than previous test. However he said that he would do his best.

Today’s topic was “Let’s enjoy word games in English.”
We did the following games;
1 What is this word?—this game is each person selects a number on the table of the website, and clicks it, and then they get some English words. Each person explain the English words in English, the others guess what they are.
2 Hangman—this is very popular game among English-spoken countries. The chairperson divided the attendees to two groups first. And then the first person of the first group says one alphabet. All alphabets are hidden. This is the game to guess the hidden alphabets and get the correct word.
The time was not enough to enjoy the third game, “Impromptus speech by roulette”. (Taka)

The report of the meeting on 10/09/2016

There were four attendees at the meeting on September 10.

First, we talked about what's new, or how the week was, which is summarized as follows:
1) The first member said that he had had his automobile inspected by a company Autobacs. This was the sixth official inspection for his car which he bought about ten years ago. It cost 25,000 yen including changing wipers and break oil. His car was in a good condition considering ten years driving. He wants to buy a new car, but he does not have a plan to buy one so far, because of less budget.
2) The second one talked about his visit to a zoo with his wife for the first time in 35 years. It were to take him about an hour from his house by car. However, thanks to a car navigation system, he could reach the zoo in 50 minutes without getting lost. The zoo lies in a broad area on the hill and it has four zones of Asia, Africa, Australia and insects. It was a hot day but there were a lot of trees. In the shade of the trees, they felt cooler. He showed some pictures of animals in the zoo.
3) The third one said she had had a plan to visit a zoo with her friends, but it had been rainy. She gave up and played a game named "Game of Life" with her friends at her house. In the game, she became very rich. It was very fun.
4) The fourth one talked about an off-line English circle which she had attended in the morning that day. The circle invited a special guest who is a Muslim. They learned about Muslim from him. His English, however, was accented, which made her a little difficult to understand his speech. The most interesting point to her was one of duties of Muslims. Rich people have to give alms to poor people. 2.5 percent out of the income has to be paid for the poor, debtors, travelers, someone that needs money, etc. It is sin for wealthy people to neglect it.

Next we moved to Today's topic, "A Special Gift". First, we read and translated the article by the sentence. Secondly, we shared our opinions and discussed related to the article. For about ten minutes left, we enjoyed "Riddles".

The report of the meeting on 03/09/2016

We had four attendees at today’s session.

The first task is “What’s new” as usual.
The first person talked about the trip to Hokkaido with her husband. It took more time from her house to Hokkaido than usual because the typhoon No.10 approached there. They looked around several sightseeing spots such as the Clock Tower or the statue of Dr. Clark.
The second attendee happily lost some weight while she stayed at her father’s house. According to her explanation some stress due to living with her father caused the weight loss. And she also talked about some essay, which she wrote for the newsletter of English conversation circle she belongs. It is about smartphone which she recently got. Among attendees discussion about smartphones took place for a while.
The third participant said that the new school year has already started in her country. And the temperature has been getting cooler in the morning. Surprisingly, the sunset time in her country at the moment is after 8 pm in the local time. The sunset time in Japan now around 6 pm, so it is quite interesting that the sunset time is different from location to location.
The last one came across a group of monkeys while walking. Because he lives in the mountainous area, wild animals such as monkeys, wild boars, and deer come down to the residential area of the humans. He saw the monkeys getting the chestnuts from the big chestnuts tree. In the autumn the residents sometimes suffer the damages by wild animals, e.g. they steal the chestnuts, persimmons or sweet potatos.

Then we went to the second task; reading an article titled “Dietary supplements could be bad for you ”, True/False questions, and discussions related to the article. Opinions about taking supplements are divided to two among the attendees. One opinion of anti-supplement is that we should taka vitamins, nutrition from foods, not from supplements. And a prescribed medicine by a doctor is more reliable than supplements. Opponents said that they partially accept the anti-supplement opinion, but it is quite hard to take all vitamins or nutrition fully by only three meals, so supplement is necessary.
Anyway, some supplements are very harmful to people, especially they take supplements too much.

We had six participants at the today’s meeting.

Firstly we did “What’s new” as usual.
The first attendee talked about the earthquake insurance. He elaborated the policy of it. For example, the insurance premium varies based on the building material and its location. Mega earthquakes are projected to happen in Tokay-Kanto region, so the premium of building in this area is more expensive than others’.

The third person was staying at father’s house in Hiroshima where she attended to FETS. She talked about the endoscope operation. Recently the operation of removing the small polyps in internal organs has got easier than before by using the endoscope. Another member took it last autumn and the operation took only 20-30 minutes.
The fourth person also explained the earthquake insurance at the beginning and then he moved to recent events about his mother. His mother live quite long fortunately. Another topic he mentioned was the first aide. He has the skill of it. If there is an occasion to explain it, he wants to do so.
The fifth talked about the violent storm which happed recently in her living area in Poland. Trees swung and bent violently by gusty wind. Because of storm some streets were flooded and a tree broke down on a car, and some people were injured. She also mentioned the soccer match which is going on now in Europe. She was so happy to watch her team win one game and draw with German team, which was the winner FIFA world cup 2014.
The last person mentioned his dog, whose health condition has been bad. It stopped eating. He took it to an animal hospital to check it. No special health problems were found. A vet suggested a heatstroke might be its cause. It is quite old, so it is natural it has many health problems.

We moved to the today’s topic-- Definition of crimes by our own. There are so many crimes nowadays. We wanted to cover all crimes, but because of limited time, we only picked up seven crimes as follows; abduction, child abuse, drunk driving, embezzlement, espionage, murder, poaching.
1 As for abduction, Japanese people were abducted by North Korea in the past, and still now many of them are not able to return to Japan. It was a national crime by North Korea and violation against human rights.
2 Child abuse was defined by one member as “the crime of harming a child physically, sexually, or emotionally”. She took an incident occurred recently in Hokkaido, Japan as an example: a child was left in an empty area by his parents for discipline. He was missing for nearly a week. There is a controversial argument over discipline and child abuse.
3 Definition of drunk driving is “driving a car under the influence of alcohol”. The punishment to drunk driving has got severer in japan than it was. Many tragic car accidents happened from drunk driving.
4 About embezzlement some crime was mentioned, which was committed by a principal of an elementary school in Japan. He stole official funds of his school.
5 Espionage is crime that someone steals secrets or information from public or private organizations such as government, especially from opponent one.
6 Concerning murder, one member distinguished between murder from hate and indiscriminate murder. In the USA, many indiscriminate murders happened. As almost all people recognize, possession of guns are admitted in the USA based on its constitution, however many people think that some stricter gun-control regulations should be set in America when we see indiscriminate murders by guns.
7 Poaching is defined as follows; The crime of illegally catching or shooting animals, birds, or fish, especially on private land without permission. Poaching is committed not only Africa but also in Japan; abalones, turban shells or sea cucumbers are caught illegally by some Japanese or criminal organization Yakuza.

This time, we used Word Online as a white board. We need to get used to this application. It is surely useful application.

Because the next person is a person of Ecuador and talked all the time when I boarded it before from Schiphol Airport to Narita Airport, the reason why I chose this article as is because it was anxious.
It was few numbers of people, but was substantial contents.

It has 90 hectares of land, where he enjoyed a lot of beautiful weeping cherry trees in full bloom that day. Kyoto Gyoen is not registered as a World Heritage Site. One of the reasons seems that the Imperial Household Agency, who controls Kyoto Gyoen, does not want UNESCO to control it.

The report of the meeting on 19/03/2016

We had six attendees today. One of them was a new comer who is originally from Japan and lives in Australia now.

Initially we exchanged the latest news which happened around them, or talked about things which they had interest. I introduce what was talked in time order.
The first person took part in free English conversation classes online which have been served by many businesses recently. These online English classes are really cheap to compare to that of being served at local facilities. And mostly teachers are Pilipino.

Recently some murder cases at the trials have attracted our interests. Namely, suspects changed their previous testimony at the questioning by police and prosecutor when the trial started. The third person put the stress on the importance of visualization at the questioning prior to the court. Especially there are no clear objective evidences except for suspects’ testimony.
Then new comer introduced himself such as his living place in Australia, the period of staying there, the reason why he attended to FETS. Given members also introduced themselves to him. We exchanged questions and answers.
The fifth participant mentioned the recent event with her old friend. Two females enjoy talking via Skype sometimes and suddenly they came to meet and visit to the Ise Shinto shrine. They enjoyed the French cuisine and chatting.

Time is too short for the last person to talk his topics, so we moved to the today’s topic.
Make five statements to see a picture. Two of them match correctly to the picture and others don’t. Each member has to make these five statements and make narration.
The purpose of this task is to make grammatically correct and natural English statements. Language skills are comprehensive, that is to say, they include speaking, listening, reading and writing.
In my theory or opinion, each area influences each other. If writing skill gets better, then speaking skill should be improved by that, and vice versa.
Making a lot of short statements is the very good way to improve the writing skill. I strongly recommend that you should do that.
Here are some examples which was made by attendees.

 No10,
1,There are many skiers on the ski slope.
2, The color of the skier’s skiwear are red and white.
3, The big tree is standing up straight.
4, The area was covered with deep snow.
5, The sky is completely gray. It will rain.

The report of the meeting on 06/02/2016

5 members came together to the today’s session. However, internet connection of one attendee was so bad that he gave up participation unfortunately. In addition to this, another participant had also a trouble with her connection. Anyway we could finish a scheduled task.

In the first session, “What’s new”, one member talked about short visit to country side near the Lake Biwa, where he grew up and his childhood friend still lives. According to him neighbors and visitors can enjoy different but beautiful scenery in each season. There is a belt line railway around the Lake Biwa, so people can travel conveniently with reasonable fair.

The topic of the last attendee was the two tests which he recently sat. One of them is that for examining the translation ability from English to Japanese. Another is TOEIC. He predicted that he might not reach his goal this time. However he continues taking the test in the future till he will get the satisfactory result.

Today’s main topic was the debate about the following theme:
Theme 1 Japan should accept more immigrants or not.
Theme 2 English should be a compulsory subject from the first grade of primary school in Japan or not. Four attendees were assigned to two groups regardless their own opinions. The debate was conducted under these rules:
1 All people have to make remark more than once at least.
2 The length of each remark has to be within 3 minutes. A timekeeper software checks the time.
3 The remarks have to be made in turn by each group.
In my opinion the debate is quite good practice to progress English conversation skill because debaters can prepare for making both their own and opposite ideas clear in advance and must refute against opposite opinion without preparation during debate.
